Affecting more than 35 million Americans, sinus infections are some of the most common ailments of today. On average over $1 billion are spent annually on over-the-counter drugs for treatment of sinusitis.
“Sinus disease is responsible for 16 million doctor visits and $150 million spent on prescription medications. People with allergies, asthma, structural blockages in the nose or sinuses, or those with weak immune systems are more prone to it.”
According to WebMD, sinusitis is an inflammation of the tissue lining of the sinuses. The sinuses are air-filled cavities located in the forehead and nasal regions of the head. When these cavities fill with fluid, they are exposed to viral, bacterial or fungal infections.
In addition, allergic rhinitis is another common condition that leads to sinus infections as a result of swelling of the lining in the nose cavities. Other contributing factors include a deviated septum, or a shift in the nasal cavity, nasal polyps and common colds.
Types of sinusitis
1) Acute sinusitis lasts for a month or less. Some of the symptoms include facial ache and a runny stuffy nose.
2) Subacute sinusitis lasts for 1-3 months.
3) Chronic sinusitis is an inflammation that last at least for a month or even longer.
4) Recurrent sinusitis appears several times a year.
